Murchison Falls. The most powerful waterfall on earth — where the entire Nile is forced through a seven-metre gap in the rock and thunders into the gorge below. Day 1 — Christmas Eve: Arriving in the Wild

Thursday, 24 December — Christmas Eve

Leave Kampala and head north — the road to Murchison is one of Uganda's most dramatic, the landscape flattening and opening as you approach the Albertine Rift. The park boundary arrives and suddenly you are inside one of Africa's great wilderness areas.

Sambiya River Lodge receives you on arrival — your full-board home for the next three nights, perched above the river in the heart of the park. The rooms are beautiful. The setting is extraordinary.

And the Christmas Eve campfire, once lit, is something you will remember every December for the rest of your life.

Day 2 — Christmas Day at the Falls

Friday, 25 December — Christmas Day

Christmas morning begins with a dawn game drive — because there is no better gift than watching elephants move across the savannah as the sun rises over Murchison. Lions. Giraffe. Buffalo. Uganda kob. The park is alive.

Then, the main event. Your boat carries you up the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls — and as you round the bend and the falls come into view, the sound hits you before the sight does. The entire Nile, compressed into seven metres, thundering down from above. On Christmas Day, surrounded by your family and the Ugandan wilderness, it is unforgettable.

From the boat, you hike to the top of the falls — standing at the very lip where the Nile makes its leap, looking down into the gorge below. The spray is cool on your face. The power beneath your feet is immense.

Day 3 — Canopy Walk & Swimming

Saturday, 26 December

The canopy walk takes you through the forest at treetop level — suspended walkways threading through the canopy with extraordinary views over the river valley and the park beyond. Birds, monkeys, and the forest in every direction.

The afternoon belongs to the swimming pool — and after three days of game drives, falls and forest walks, it is very, very welcome. Splash around. Float. Let the children exhaust themselves while the park carries on around you.

Day 4 — One Last Morning at the River

Sunday, 27 December

A final full-board breakfast with the Nile below and the park waking up around you. One last look at the river. One last breath of air that smells of grass and water and Africa.

Then the drive back to Kampala — full of wildlife photographs, campfire stories, and the knowledge that this family did Christmas properly.
