Most Ugandans have never been to Kidepo. That's about to change.
In the far northeast corner of Uganda, where the land opens into vast golden savannah and the sky goes on forever, sits one of the most extraordinary national parks in Africa. Kidepo Valley. Lions. Elephants. Cheetah. Buffalo. Over 77 mammal species in a park so remote, so unspoiled, that you may spend an entire game drive without seeing another vehicle. This is Uganda at its most wild — and it has been waiting for you to come and find it.
Four days. One road north. Everything changes.
Friday, 28 August
Leave Kampala early — the road to Kidepo is long and magnificent, and every kilometre north reveals a Uganda that most people in the city have never seen.
A lunch stopover in Gulu breaks the journey — a city with its own extraordinary story, rebuilt and thriving, with food worth stopping for.
Then the final stretch into Kidepo. The landscape shifts as you enter Karamoja — broader, drier, more ancient-feeling. By the time you reach Apoka Rest Camp and check in, you'll understand that you have arrived somewhere genuinely different. The camp sits inside the park, surrounded by wilderness on every side.
Dinner under the stars. Tomorrow, the game drives begin.
Saturday, 29 August
Up before the sun — because in Kidepo, the early hours are when the park comes alive.
Your guide takes you out into the valley as the light turns golden over the savannah. Kidepo's wildlife is legendary among those who know it — lions that have never been habituated to tourist vehicles, elephants moving in large herds across the open plains, buffalo, zebra, oribi, and if the morning is generous, the rare cheetah cutting across the grass in the early heat. With fewer visitors than any other major Ugandan park, the sightings here feel genuinely wild. Because they are.
Then the afternoon delivers something equally extraordinary — a cultural visit to a Karamojong manyatta. The Karamojong are one of Uganda's most fascinating peoples, semi-nomadic pastoralists whose traditions, dress, and way of life have remained largely unchanged for centuries. This is not a performance for tourists. This is a community welcoming you into their world — their cattle, their homestead, their songs, their story.
Sunday, 30 August
Today you experience Kidepo on foot — and that changes everything.
Your guide and an armed ranger lead you out into the bush on a nature walk that brings the park to a completely different scale. The trees you drive past become the plants your guide names. The tracks in the soil tell you what passed through in the night. The birds — Kidepo has over 475 recorded species — fill the air around you. Walking in the African bush with someone who knows it is one of the great experiences of this continent.
The afternoon takes you to Adere Lodge — one of the most beautifully situated lodges in Uganda, perched on a hill overlooking the valley. Lunch is served here, and the swimming pool offers the most spectacular view you have ever had while doing absolutely nothing.
Monday, 31 August
An early breakfast as Kidepo wakes up around you one last time. Check out, load the vehicle, and begin the long, beautiful drive back to Kampala — carrying everything this park gave you: the lion sighting, the Karamojong elder, the morning light over the valley, the silence.
Uganda has always been this extraordinary. Most people just haven't driven far enough north to find it.
